It deals with the initial stabilization of all types of emergencies notwithstanding age, gender or type of illness. It is an area of both rapid diagnosis and treatment, while also being time sensitive in all aspects. As mentioned by some of the founders of Emergency Medicine in the USA, it is “ the most exciting 15 minutes of all other specialties”

Emergency Departments are temples of knowledge of emergencies pertaining to various medical and surgical specialties. Young doctors and nurses can learn varied life saving procedures ranging from Endo-tracheal intubation to Intercostal tube insertion. It is also a place where soft skills like breaking bad news, de-escalation of arguments and negotiation can be learnt. Here, team work across all cadres of healthcare can be witnessed and practiced.

This vital department is the face of the hospital and hence a crucial area where multiple challenges are encountered. Several important treatment decisions and admissions of various patients occur through the Emergency Medicine Department. Despite being a volatile environment, it has the potential to touch many people when they are at their most vulnerable self.
