Department of Respiratory Medicine

Respiratory Medicine is considered a branch of internal medicine specially trained in diseases and conditions of the chest, particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, ILD and complicated chest infections and often involves managing patients who need life support and mechanical ventilation.

“Over the years it has graduated to a multidisciplinary specialty department with excellent teaching and research programmes in tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. A holistic approach is followed in management of patients with respiratory problems”.

Teaching Activity

The esteemed faculty of full-time professors, lecturers and honorary teachers ensure that a high degree of academic excellence is maintained in the department. This is reflected by the innumerous laurels received by the department in the form of awards at various state and national conferences (papers, posters, quiz) as well as numerous publications in national and international journals. We teach undergraduate MBBS students. Undergraduate teaching is mainly lectures and bedside clinics, seminars, Journal Clubs, case presentations, as well as Research projects as part of their dissertations. We have been presenting several papers in state level as well as national level conferences

Hospital Services

  1. Attached Area TB centre for comprehensive management of Tuberculosis ( Involvement in National Health programme)
    • DOTS centre under RNTCP has been functional since March 1999.
    • Designated microscopy centre (DMC) offering free sputum AFB testing has been functional since 27th January 2009.
    • Designated DRTB centre under NTEP since 2021.
    • We have got designated Nodal Officer and Medical Officer for NTEP.
  2. Facilities for evaluation, diagnosis, management and referral of Multi Drug Resistant TB.
  3. Fibreoptic bronchoscopy with video attachment for routine diagnosis and emergency treatment.
  4. Pulmonary function laboratory with computerised flow volume loops, measurement of diffusion and lung volumes and capacities.
  5. Sleep laboratory for diagnosis and treatment of sleep related respiratory disorders.
  6. Attached full-fledged Indoor services for providing care for patients requiring hospitalization for respiratory ailments.
  7. Indoor admissions for treating patients with respiratory failure with non invasive ventilators.
  8. ICU facility dedicated to the care of critically ill patients suffering from chest diseases like severe Asthma, COPD, and ILD etc. It offers facilities like oxygen supply, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), Invasive mechanical ventilation, etc. We also perform procedures like bronchoscopy, ICD insertion, & medical thoracoscopy.
