Department of Pathology

  • The Pathology department forms the backbone of any hospital as it provides the diagnosis which is essential for any treatment.
  • Pathology literally translates to the ‘Study of Suffering’ and more precisely the term is used for study of diseases.
  • The aetiology, mechanism of diseases and changes occurring in organs at macroscopic as well as microscopic level are studied. The changes are correlated with clinical findings.
  • Investigations, principles of techniques and interpretation of the results are also part of this subject.

Teaching Activity

  • The department of Pathology conducts theory and practical training sessions for students enrolled in various educational programmes conducted by the college as:
    • Undergraduate programmes: MBBS, Physiotherapy, Nursing.
    • Postgraduate programmes: MD, PGDMLT
  • Various teaching learning methods used are theory lectures, small group teaching, tutorials, demonstrations, hands-on practicals, case based learning, OSPEs, etc.
  • The department houses two practical laboratories and a museum with more than 1000 mounted specimens. A penta-head microscope with camera and display has also been installed for easy learning of histopathology and cytopathology.
  • Apart from these, the teachers take active part in various CMEs, conferences and senior surgical meetings to keep themselves updated. The teachers are members of various groups formed by Mumbai pathologists like Bombay Cytology Group, Gynaec pathology and Breast Pathology Group.
  • The department contributes slides for the MAPCON (Maharashtra Chapter Conference) slide seminar every year. Papers and posters are presented by faculty members.

Hospital Services

  • The department houses service laboratories - Haematology, Histopathology and Cytology which are equipped with latest instruments including auto-analyzers, Coagulometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Cryostat, Automated tissue embedding machine, etc.
  • Haematology and Clinical Pathology services are offered round-the-clock for all patients of K. J. Somaiya Hospital (OPD, IPD, Casualty, ICU, samples collected during various health camps, etc).
  • Histopathology and Cytology services are offered which includes different tests grouped as follows :
    • FNAC
    • Fluid Cytology
    • Pap smear
    • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsies
    • Histopathology including skin biopsies
    • Frozen section histopathology
  • Individuals and organisations can also directly avail these services for purposes like pre-employment / in-service health check-ups, etc.
  • The Cytology and Haematology labs participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes, ensuring high accuracy and precision of test results.
