Abstract Aims & Objectives: To study sociodemographic profile of patients with chronic backache.To study prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in these patients.Material & methods:74 consecutive adult patients with chronic backache were included.Socio demographic data collected using semi-structured proforma.Psychiatric diagnosis made according to DSM IV TR system.Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) applied to assess depression and anxiety. Ethics committee approval and informed consent was taken.Data thus collected tabulated and statistically analyzed.Results: 71%of the patients were females. 48.6% of the patients were housewives. Depression and anxiety were the most common clinical diagnosis. VAPS scores co related positively with the HADS score.
