The Department of Neurosurgery at the K.J. Somaiya Hospital and Medical College is a State of Art facility built for the treatment of all kinds of brain and spine disorders. It is located on the third floor of the superspeciality building.
The department is visited by national and international neurosurgeons and 'neurosurgeons in training' for advancing their neurosurgical knowledge and skills. The department also has a seminar room with a direct relay from the operation theatre for enhancing surgical education.
The department has a microneurosurgical laboratory for performing anatomical dissections, training younger neurosurgeons and for research activities. The department has applied for starting the M.Ch. Neurosurgery program and also fellowship programs in various subspecialities of the subject.
The department is headed by Prof. Atul Goel, who is internationally known and respected in the management of all kinds of complex brain tumors, vascular lesions and spinal ailments. His academic contributions to the subject are acknowledged. The department boasts of two modular operation theaters equipped with the latest neurosurgical equipment for performing complex neurosurgical cases. The Department has a dedicated neurosurgical and stroke ICU equipped with all modern amenities providing quality health care to critical patients. It has a comprehensive epilepsy unit dedicated for medical and surgical care of epilepsy patients. The department is also planning to have a movement disorder clinic.
The center is reputed for innovative techniques developed for treatment of complex craniovertebral anomalies including basilar invagination, Chiari malformations and atlantoaxial dislocations and for degenerative spinal disorders. We have an extensive experience in the treatment of complex brain tumors that include trigeminal neurinomas, foramen magnum meningiomas, sphenoid wing meningiomas and cerebellopontine angle tumors. Cerebrovascular surgeries, epilepsy surgery, stereotactic surgeries, image guided neuronavigation, pediatric neurosurgery and skull base surgeries are specialized expertise offered by the Department. Awake craniotomies, brain mapping and intra-operative monitoring techniques are being performed routinely.
The department serves as a referral centre for neurosurgical patients from through-out the country and from other countries.
