Background : Rapidly increasing geriatric population call for researh to assess prevalence of psychiatric morbidity like depression and congitive dysfuction in them. This is necessary to deliver effective healthh care services to them. Aims: To study the socio-demographic profile, depression and congnitive functionning in medically ill geriatric patients attending healthcare system in various setting. Material and Method : This was cross- sectional study where patients age>60yrs attending general outpatient department and inpatient units & a community health center(n=30 in each group) & willing to give informed consent were enrolled. After obtaining socio-demographic details, patients were assessed using Geriatric Depression Scale & Mini Mental State Examination scale. Data thus obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and perecentage. Result : Majority of patients from all settings belonged to age group 60-70 yrs. Prevalance of depression was found more in IPD & community centre, which was 43.3% each. More females were found to be depressed than males in all three settings. Half of the Hospitalized patients ahd cognitive impairment whereas, in OPD & community centre, cognitive decline was seen in 40% & 36.67% of patients respectively. Conclusion : Current study highlights presence of psychiatric morbidity in medically ill geriatric poluation in all three setting, with slight prepondeance in hospitalized patients. Thus it emphasize the need for screening of medically ill geriatric patients in various settings to get clearer picture of psychiatric morbidity in this age group.
