Study of cervical cytological patterns in women(Age group 30-59) attending cervical screening programme in two urban slum communities of Mumbai

Cervical cancer remains worldwide the second most common cancer among women. It accounts for 15% of all female cancers. It is the leading female cancer in subSaharan Africa. parts of Latin America, southeast Asia. This study was carried out to screen women and to find out the proportion of women with cervical cancer. A total of 288 women attended the screening programme. Eligible women were interviewed using semistructured interview schedule. Out of 225 Pap smears examined. 169 were adequate. 87.57% of smears showed evidence of benign cellular changes with imflammation. 10.65% were within normal limits. 0.59% showed presence of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. 1.18% showed presence of low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. Out of 151 women who had abnormal Pap smears only 40 were symptomatic. Considering the high proportion of abnormal cervical smear in the study. periodic. selective screening program coupled with health education could be the cost effective approach for addressing the reproductive health problems among women
