Medical Microbiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study of microorganisms and their role in human health and diseases. The Microbiology laboratory at K. J. Somaiya Medical College & Hospital is NABL accredited with a state of the art Molecular Biology Laboratory ensuring quality. Diagnosis of infectious pathogens along with their susceptibility pattern to guide the clinician for appropriate therapy, Infection prevention and control activity along with typing of microorganisms for epidemiological purpose and diagnosis of various viral diseases being its major responsibility.
The department of Microbiology conducts theory and practical training sessions for students enrolled in various educational programs conducted by the college.
Undergraduate programs: MBBS, BPTh , B.Sc Nursing
Post graduate programs: PGDMLT, DPB (CPS), DNB
Internship for other college students: DMLT, M.Sc (Microbiology, Bio technology)
The activities include theory lectures, small group teaching, tutorials, demonstrations, SDL and hands-on practicals. The department houses a teaching laboratory and is equipped with a multitude of instruments including Molecular biology, GeneXpert, BacTAlert and Vitek2 for imparting training to students.
Bacteriology, Serology and Molecular Biology all sections are NABL accredited.
Microbiology services are offered round-the-clock for all patients of K. J. Somaiya Hospital (OPD, IPD, Casualty, ICU, samples collected during various health camps, etc.) and include over hundred different tests grouped as follows:
