  • Abstract

Introduction:Night eating syndrome (NES) is characterized by recurrent episodes of night eating, delay in the circadian pattern of food intake manifested by lack of desire to eat in the morning, strong urge to eat after dinner and eating to initiate or return to sleep. It has been included in DSM-5. NES appears to be more prevalent in young adults and adolescents.Aims and Objectives: (1)To study the prevalence of risk of night eating syndrome in first year college students.(2) To study anxiety and depression in at risk night eating syndrome (AR-NES) group.(3)To study BMI and maladaptive eating behaviour patterns in AR-NES group.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1styear college students in Mumbai was undertaken. A questionnaireconsisting of demographic data, Night Eating Syndrome Questionnaire (NEQ), Beck Anxiety inventory (BAI), Beck Depression inventory (BDI) and Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) was given to students after taking informed consent. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS-16 computer package. Results: Out of total 513 students, males were 68% (349) and females were 32% (164).The prevalence of AR-NES was found to be 8.8%.The prevalence among males was10.6% and among females was 4.9%. 42.2% students showed comorbid anxiety/depression. 35.6% of the students were underweight, 11.1% were overweightand11.1% were obese. Binge eating, purging and diet pill/laxative use were other behaviours being used. ConclusionIt is necessary to screen for NES to prevent further physical and psychiatric morbidity.
