The rapidly increasing geriatric popluation is an unquestioned demographic fact in the early twenty first century. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the geriatric age group are dementia, mood disorders and anxiety disorders. They can be further compicated by medical co morbidity and substance use. Thus, effective assessment of elderly patients requires a holistic and interdisciplinary apporach to evaluate the medical, psychological and social aspects of geriatric health. Aim and objectives 1. To study the socio-demographic profile of elderly people attending psychiatric OPD of general teaching hospital. 2. Study the type of psychiatric morbidity in these patients and its prevalence. 3. To Study the prevalence of co-morbid medical illness in the population. Material and Methods All patients above 60 years of age attending the psychiatry OPD of a general teaching hospital over a period of two years were interviewed using a specially designed proforma and SCID I was used for assessing psychiatric morbidity according to DSM IV TR. Patients wiht onset of psychiatric illness before the age of 60 were exculded. Data thus collected pooled and subjected to statistical analysis. Result and Discussion : A total of 64 patients were studied of which 31 were males and 33 were females. The result is discussed in view of the available literature.
