  • Abstract

Aim:To study the course of femoral vessels in the femoral triangle. Materials & Methods:This study on the course of femoral vessels in the femoral triangle was performed on 50 (100 specimens of inferior extremities) embalmed donated cadavers (40 males & 10 females) in the department of Anatomy of K.J.Somaiya Medical College, Sion, Mumbai, India. The dissection of the lower limb was done meticulously to expose the femoral vessels. The relationship of the femoral vessels in the femoral triangle was observed. The neuro muscular pattern of the lower limbs were also observed. The photographs of the course of femoral vessels in the femoral triangle were taken for proper documentation.Observations and results:Out of 100 specimens of inferior extremities the variant course of femoral vessels in the femoral triangle was observed in 4 specimens. The femoral artery crossed the femoral vein deep to the inguinal ligament such that the artery was seen lying superficial to the vein through the entire course in the femoral triangle. There were no associated altered anatomy of the nerves and muscles which were observed. All the variations were unilateral. Conclusion: The awareness of the variant course of femoral artery is clinically important for surgeons, plastic surgeons and orthopaedicians. This study demonstrates the importance of knowing the anatomy of femoral vessels by using ultrasonic imaging before any blind femoral vessel cannulation or surgical intervention.
