  • Abstract

Anatomy is one of the first subjects that students come in contact with when they enter medical college and it serves as the basis of learning of all future disciplines. The first day of their medical education often embarks with a tour of the dissection hall where they would later have to dissect a cadaver that was once a live human being. Studies have often reported that student’s reactions to dissection in anatomy may vary from that of gladness to one of anxiety and even repugnance that may lead to some students even fainting in the dissection hall once they see the first cut given to a cadaver. . Trysts with dissection and exploration of the human body through cadavers have often been the first stepping stones for medical students that have resulted in many of them taking an active interest in surgery and surgical sciences as their branch of choice in post graduation2 . When young doctors start learning the nuances of anatomy, the cadaver is an indispensable teacher that imparts information and live visualization of the human body, a facility not available in most clinical specialities. Students very often may poke fun at the look of cadavers with different bodies being of different shapes and sizes and may stand near the dead body in a manner disrespectful to cadaver. The cadaveric oath is a noble way to inculcate the basic tenets of bioethics within first year medical students.
